Ecobricks: turning plastic waste into pavement bricks

Hands-on research on pavement bricks made from plastic waste, using seaweed, sawdust, rice husk, clay and sand.

The Ecobrick Research Assistants Training, funded by the Chatham House Sustainability Accelerator, brought participants together to develop and test sustainable solutions for transforming plastic waste into resilient pavement bricks. Models use seaweed, sawdust, rice husk, clay and sand and prioritise eco-friendly production, reduced harmful emissions and minimal microplastic pollution.

Njala University's leadership has called for an MOU and a proposal combining the plastic waste-to-bricks venture with a biomass initiative.
